 Photosynthesis

 The process by which green plants make their food is called photosynthesis. (photo means light and synthesis means building up). The process of photosynthesis is carried out in leaves. The leaves are green due to the presence of a pigment called chlorophyll. Chlorophyll help to capture the energy of the Sun. Green plants use carbon dioxide present in the air, and water present in soil to make food ( mostly as sugars and carbohydrate) in the presence of chlorophyll and sunlight. The whole process can be described as below. Carbon dioxide + water Sunlight. = chlorophyll Carbohydrate + oxygen Stomata are the tiny pores present on the surface of leaves. These are surrounded by bean-shaped guard cells. Exchange of gas take place through stomata. Thus carbon dioxide enter the leaves through these pores.
